Aftercare

Immediate Aftercare

If you have second skin on:
Your bandage acts as a protective barrier against bacteria and friction. Keep it on for 24–48 hours (or as directed by your artist). This helps the tattoo begin healing and lowers the risk of infection.

If you don’t have second skin:

  • Remove the plastic wrap the same day as your appointment.

  • Wash the tattoo gently with fragrance-free antibacterial soap.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never use a used towel, as it can introduce bacteria.

  • Apply a sheer layer of Aquaphor (or a tattoo-specific aftercare product).

Removing Second Skin

  • Peel the bandage off while rinsing with warm water to ease discomfort.

  • Once removed, wash the area gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap.

  • Pat dry with a paper towel.

  • If sticky residue remains, rub it off gently with any fragrance-free oil (such as coconut, jojoba, or olive oil).

Ongoing Care

Healing happens in two stages:

First 2–4 weeks (outer skin):

  • Wash gently twice a day with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.

  • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer (Aquaphor or tattoo-specific aftercare is best).

  • Avoid:

    • Heavy sweating or intense workouts

    • Direct sunlight

    • Swimming pools, saunas, hot tubs, or soaking in baths

3–6 months (inner skin):
The deeper layers are still repairing. During this time:

  • Protect your tattoo from sun exposure and bumps.

  • Keep your body healthy with good rest and nutrition to support healing.

Watch for Warning Signs

Contact a healthcare professional right away if you notice:

  • Excessive redness, swelling, pus, or fever (possible infection)

  • Severe itching, rash, or discomfort (possible allergic reaction)
